Training Review and Appeals Procedure
This procedure is available to students: –
a.) Wishing to seek review of written feedback from teachers to students
b.) Wishing to appeal against decisions made by the CTC about themselves as individuals where such decisions have a major impact upon their personal progress through the training.
This procedure does not cover complaints. Students wishing to enter a complaint or a grievance should refer to the relevant procedure. Where a student wishes to make an appeal and a complaint the complaint will be heard first.
The Adjudicator will receive a report from the Chair of the complaints panel on matters relevant to the appeal. Appeals from third parties will not be considered
A) Feedback Review:
Where a student believes that either she/he has received unfair written feedback or that the teacher has not followed the procedure for feedback set out in “Guidelines for Teachers” and Handbook she/he should in the first instance discuss the feedback with the teacher concerned and the Course Tutor.
If the student remains dissatisfied with the feedback following these discussions the student should write to the Clinical Training Committee. Such a letter should succinctly spell out the nature of the objection to the feedback and the steps so far taken to address it with the person concerned.
The Chair of the Clinical Training Committee will be responsible for ensuring that the teacher concerned receives a copy of the letter from the student. The teacher may then respond in writing to the Clinical Training Committee.
The Clinical Training Committee will consider the student’s objection to the feedback, the teacher’s response to it, and the report from the Course Tutor. The Chair of the Clinical Training Committee will report, in writing, to the student on the Clinical Training Committee’s reasoning and decision and will notify the Course Tutor and the teacher concerned of the outcome.
There is no process of appeal beyond the CTC on matters concerning feedback to students unless it forms part of an appeal under Section B (below).
B) Appeals
Appeals will be heard on the following matters only:
A decision to terminate or suspend attendance at the course
Refusal of Psychotherapist in Training status following a second application or after six months, whichever occurs sooner.
Suspension of Psychotherapist in Training status.
A decision to disallow new referrals for a period longer than six months
Refusal of registration as a Registered Attachment-based Psychoanalytic Psychotherapist.
Exceptional circumstances (the acceptance of appeals under this provision will be at the discretion of the Chair of the Trustees.).
Where a student believes that they have a right to appeal under one of these grounds she/he should in the first instance discuss her/his concern with the Course Tutor.
If the student remains dissatisfied following these discussions the student should write to the Clinical Training Committee. Such a letter should succinctly spell out the nature of the appeal and request the Clinical Training Committee to review its decision.
The Clinical Training Committee will arrange a meeting between the student, the Course Tutor and another member of the Clinical Training Committee to discuss the Clinical Training Committee’s decision. The Clinical Training Committee will review the decision in the light of this meeting. The Chair of the Clinical Training Committee will report, in writing, to the student on the Clinical Training Committee’s reasoning and decision.
Appeals against the decision of the Clinical Training Committee should be made in writing to the Chair of The Bowlby Centre
Appeals are heard by an external adjudicator appointed by a member of the Trustees.
The procedure followed by the adjudicator will be at her/his discretion save that a written report will be made to the Trustees and a copy sent to the student, the Chair of the Clinical Training Committee and the Chair of The Bowlby Centre.
A fee of £150 is payable by the appellant which will be refunded by the organisation if the appeal is successful.
